Letting Go

Devotional on dealing with the Empty Nest
When I dropped my firstborn off at college a few months ago, I was amazed at how easy it actually was.

My mother had been very emotional when we brought my brother to school years ago, but for me, well, this college thing was a breeze.

Or so I thought.

What I didn’t understand about the whole separation process was that deep inside of me I had over 19 years of memories piled up.

There was the day I first met my son after a tough delivery. He was huge, handsome and hungry!

The day he first skinned his perfect little knee, played his first t-ball game, joined the basketball team and went to the prom.

I had been with this boy his whole life – through all the ups and downs – and it took my heart a few days to remember all that and then, boy did the waterworks kick in!

Tears would hit me at weird moments like when I ...

Who is God? God is a loving Father who is available to help us through the tough times. He understands the deep workings of our hearts - even better than we do. He "gets" us. Because we can call Him, "Abba" or "Daddy," we have an even greater understanding of what it means to be His child. And, it helps us to be willing to entrust our own children to Him.

Recognizing life in the womb: A story about a father's loss

Dealing with the loss of an unborn child
By Michel Sauret - Guest Post

In 2006, my wife told me she was pregnant. We weren’t married then.

We were both in college.

She had ambitious goals of becoming a federal agent, while I studied creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh.

I became scared. Terrified, actually.

I knew – in my heart, in my mind, in my soul – that we had committed adultery, and there were consequences to be paid.

People (even Christians, unfortunately) often question whether premarital sex constitutes as adultery. I think the clearest passage to address this question is when Jesus said, “I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:27 / NIV) The “woman” in question in this passage is obviously not one married to the man leering lustfully at her.

If “looking” constitutes adultery, how much more is physical intimacy?

Twelve (very emotional) weeks later, we lost the baby. ...

Why is it Wrong to Lie?

To lie or tell the truth. Why does it matter?
By Debra Torres
Claudia said she didn’t take Joyce’s stuffed animal.

It wasn’t hers, so what would she have to do with it?

Again and again she denied that she took it, but when we challenged her to open her square, metal lunchbox,

I’m sure we probably gasped at what was inside.

Joyce’s toy.

It was 1973 and I was in second grade. And even though I was only 7, I can still see the tormented look on Claudia’s face when her peers caught her in the act.

A lying tongue cuts both ways.

In my devotions this morning, I read that we are responsible to teach our children about lying and why it is wrong. And it also said that we should use God’s Word to do it.

This challenged me to do a little digging, because you know what? As parents and grandparents, I think we often do a disservice to the young ones who are watching us. Can you guess what it is?

We Lie.

Who is God?

Have you been hurt by a lying tongue? Do you struggle with lying, yourself? When you seek God, you seek the Truth. He is a loving Father who cannot and will not lie.
"God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?"  Numbers 23:19 NIV

Give Me Pie!

_ It was a less than perfect dinner.

My husband was working late, and we were out of frozen food -- except for chicken nuggets, and I had served those the night before.

So, I tried a new recipe, but it didn’t go over well with my nugget-loving son.

Maybe that's what got the ball rolling.

We should have prayed over Mom before we prayed over the food.

I was exhausted when I finally sat down...
