At church, there were friendly people who accepted her for who she was, there were plenty of social opportunities, and there was that general feeling that came when you fulfilled your duty. Guest speakers came into their classrooms to talk about the holidays, and they would make crafts of the menorah and have information on the foods and activities of the Kwanzaa celebration. Now explaining Jewish and African-American holidays was all well and good with me, but there was one thing my boys never came home with -- the explanation of the Christian celebration of Christmas. Skidding to a stop just a few steps to her right, she almost had it before another little hand snatched it up. That wasn’t the first time she and her sister had missed out that day.
