It was years ago, and I was working at a summer camp for the Salvation Army up on Lake Ontario. My roommate and I had put in a full day’s work and we were taking a much deserved break when the little girl entered our staff cabin. “The nurse isn’t in,” she said sweetly, “and I cut my finger.” I got up from where I’d flopped on my bed, found a Band-Aid and gently took care of her. Playing nurse wasn’t in my job description, but I knew enough about little wounds to be able to help and then send the girl on her way. It was after dinner and the kids were out playing before our evening program. Things were winding down and should have been fairly copacetic, but when I walked the little girl out and looked towards the nurse’s cabin I knew something was very wrong. Many years ago while in church, I was sitting next to a very, very old man who turned to me during the time we were all to turn to our neighbor and extend a handshake or a hug, and while I turned to him to shake his hand, he gently told me he had just lost his wife recently. Tears welled up in his eyes as he told me this. I wasn't expecting that. I turned knowing full well my God was using this to extend His love to that little old man, and hugged him without thinking. Tears welled up and flowed down my checks as we stood there that morning. I knew God had called me there that day to love that man through me. I continued to keep him in prayer for a long time. Isn't Our Savior wonderful?! 1/5/2013 01:30:12 pm
Beautiful story, Anna. Thank you so much for sharing it. Sounds like God had you in just the right place at just the right time. Isn't it a wonderful feeling?

Way back in 1976, my Slippery Rock friends were visiting my home near the Pittsburgh Airport, celebrating my January birthday with me. After dinner, my four college friends and I, with my old boyfriend, went to the Saturday night service at Calvary Chapel of Coraopolis. My old boyfriend (a pot enthusiast) really enjoyed the service!! Amazing!! He had to go to his frat for some event - well, it was hellnight. My friends and I crowded into John's car and headed back to my parents' home. We stopped at the scene of an accident on Route 30, near Clinton, PA - a few miles from my home. We were the first on the scene. An LTD was upside down and a Corvair (famous from Ralph Nader's book - Unsafe at Any Speed) was damaged. My friend John was a phys ed major at Slippery Rock. He quickly entered the Corvair and turned the ignition off and then began to attempt to stop the blood flowing from the driver's injuries. John knew what to do and he taught our other friend Michael how to apply pressure as well, to save the driver's life. It was freezing cold and the blood actually froze as it came to the surface of her skin. My friends, Pam and Katie and I prayed inside our vehicle as the guys waited for the ambulance and provided first aid. Turns out the Corvair driver was my neighbor, Mrs Dawson. The other driver had been drinking too much and really didn't have serious injuries. After the ambulance arrived, we left, stopping on the way home at the Dawson home. Mr Dawson opened the door and we told him about the accident and formed a circle and prayed with him. That was 37 years ago! Mrs Dawson still wears a brace - she is about 90 something. It was a pivotal time in her life when God let her know He loved her! Seems odd that such a potentially life ending incident could help her discover the Father's love!! God had positioned us to be the first at the scene - amazing!!

God was in that incident from beginning to end. And He's still working to demonstrate His love through many people at many times - sometimes through Mrs. Dawson. I think God smiles every time that story is retold. Comments are closed.
